Children ready to welcome the world

Schoolchildren in Northallerton are getting arty to celebrate the arrival of the biggest sporting event in the town’s history.

Mill Hill Primary School is one of seven primary schools taking part in a competition to design land art for the UCI Road World Championships on Wednesday September 25, when some of cycling’s biggest names will be arriving in the High Street for the men’s elite individual time trial.

A panel of eight students from Northallerton School and Sixth Form College will pick a winning design to appear on the school fields to be seen by millions of TV viewers.

“Our pupils are very excited about the World Championships coming to Northallerton and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that one of our designs will be chosen,” says Mill Hill Head Teacher Rebecca Bainbridge.

The school is displaying one of the huge banners now appearing around Northallerton in readiness for the event. More than 60 businesses have adopted countries taking part and they have been given large flags and window stickers by Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID).

There will be prizes for the best-dressed shops and businesses in a competition organised by Hambleton District Council and the BID.

Businesses interested in entering the competition are asked to contact BID Manager Graham Bell:
